The Energy of Gaia with Louesa Roebuck

This live interview was recorded on June 12, 2024 and takes place on land that was originally inhabited by the Chumash people.

After a two-hour drive through greater Los Angeles, I arrive at Louesa’s place by way of a steep winding road, strewn with Sticky Monkey Flower and native Sage. Upon entering the rustic wooden gate, I’m greeted by Louesa and three pups and instantly transported to paradise. At 2500 feet, I stand in the yard overlooking the Topatopa mountains, with the faint call of Hawkling in the distance, birds, bees, and butterflies swirl about, darting from flower to flower, as the fragrance of scented Geranium fills the air. The activity is great amid a sense of tranquility. A gorgeous juxtaposition that sets the stage for our epic conversation.

We go inside and I’m received by Curtis, her long-time partner and art collaborator, whom I fondly know from visiting their gallery in the past. The atmosphere is generous and warm within the walls of their cozy home. Louesa shows me around and offers chocolate, mulberries, and jasmine tea from a glorious table set with antique china, glassware, and linens, adorned with elegant florals. She then requests that I wander the grounds to take in the magic. 

I’m quiet as I trapse through the transforming landscape that surrounds the house. As I pause to smell the enchanting fragrance of Mermaid Rose, I encounter Hollyhock nearly twice as tall as me, and I bow before her grace. A moment of reflection at the base of Grandmother Olive feels relevant, as she releases her flowers into the pottery pools below. This place holds me.  A safe haven where one can rest into the grace of Gaia’s divine plan.

Before we even begin the interview, we talk for over an hour and touch on our aligned views of the energies of the feminine and masculine, and how these polarities are present in all of the abundant life-force of which we are a part. Time lapses as we do a deep dive that lasts for several hours. We explore the balancing act of being human within the greater sphere of non-human beings, the art of foraging, and how learning to honor the inevitable demise of all life is at the root of an evolved humanity. Louesa’s voice, strong and clear, is also light when we talk about the beauty and power found within the rhythms of Gaia. As she speaks, I notice Hawk creating a blanket of shadows amid dappled rays of sun overhead. A poignant balance of darkness and light, to accentuate our profound reflections on the myriad challenges and extraordinary gifts of life.
